Backyard farming is taking root wherever there is a bit of extra space to plant, and it's changing lives in the process. Take Thabiseng - she moved to Kayamandi three years ago, leaving behind the Eastern Cape in search of job opportunities. But when those opportunities didn’t materialise, she turned to something she had always loved—gardening.
"I could not find work at home in the Eastern Cape so I moved hoping to get a job. But there was nothing here for me either. So I thought about how much I love to garden and saw there was enough space to start growing vegetables. This is my job now." She is one of the partners supported by 'Backyard Farms' a social enterprise working with unemployed women from the communities and townships around the Western Cape of South Africa. Their harvests are purchased by BYF and used in a growing range of brands.
